In time the Sign of the Beef Carver at 27400 Woodward Ave. in Royal Oak became a big destination for the gray-haired set.

Food critic Carlos Parisi, the former host of Deadline Detroit's show, "Detroit Digest," does a trip down memory lane and visits the Beef Carver where he used to go with his great uncle Sam at least once a week.

Parisi orders the scrod, mac and cheese, some greens and a slice of apple-pecan-carmel pie.

Before you watch the video below, a little history:

The Sign of the Beefcarver, the original one being in Royal Oak, was once a popular chain of cafeteria-style restaurants that served comfort foods like roast beef, beef liver and onions, turkey and dressing, meat loaf and baked scrod.

It became especially popular among the senior set, insisting that all dishes are "baked or steamed, never fried." Sites dotted Metro Detroit.

In 2018, the one on Michigan Avenue in Dearborn shut after 51 years, leaving the Royal Oak spot as the sole survivor.

Watch the video to see his critique.
