Chamber of Commerce in St. Clair County Accuses State Senator's Wife of Stealing $32,300

The Yale Area Chamber of Commerce in  St. Clair County filed a lawsuit Tuesday accusing the wife of a prominent Republican state senator of stealing $32,300 by writing checks from the organization to herself, the Detroit News reports.

The suit names Kellie Lauwers, wife of Michigan state Sen. Dan Lauwers.

The lawsuit says law enforcement has been "investigating the criminal side" of the allegations.

Frank Manley, the attorney for Kellie Lauwers in the criminal investigation, tells the News in a written statement:

"The investigation is ongoing, and Mrs. Lauwers is presumed innocent. She looks forward to answering any questions presented when the investigation is completed."

He said he had not seen the lawsuit.
