Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is expected to announce Monday that he wants Todd Bettison, the interim police chief, to become the permanent one, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Duggan will forward Bettison's name to city council which must approve the permanent appointment.

Shortly after being named interim chief last October, Bettison appeared on the podcast, "Detroit in Black and White" and said, "I'm confident I'll be selected as the permanent chief."

Bettison has spent nearly three decades with the police department.

Attempts to reach Bettison for comment Sunday night were unsuccessful. Mayor Duggan's press secretary John Roach did not respond to a text or call for comment.

Bettison served as Chief James White's second in command before being named deputy mayor in 2022. In October 2024, he was named interim chief.

Duggan will serve as mayor through 2025. He's announced that he's running as an Independent.
