A cousin of the mother whose two children froze to death in a van in the parking structure for Hollywood Casino at Greektown last Monday has launched a GoFundMe campaign that has raised more than $48,000 so far.
The top of the page, which has the headline: "Detroit mom called city for help before 2 kids froze in casino parking garage," was created by a cousin who identifies herself as Javeina M.
The kids, 9 and 2, were among 29-year-old Tateona Williams' five children, ages 2 to 13, who were in the van that night. The city acknowledged that Williams sought help from the city for housing back in November, but nothing came of it. The city is reviewing the matter in hopes of providing better services to those in need.
The cousin writes on the page:

So before you judge, pray for her and her strength. Then look in the mirror because she ain’t do nothing anyone else would not have done. She loved, protected, and did all she could to keep her babies safe…ON HER OWN!
Her only fault was her PRIDE and that’s gut-blowing because as a family if we knew we would have tried to help in some way Although everyone has it, you just have to learn to have it with the right people during the right situations.

They stayed fed, bathed, and in school regardless of where they slept. They were happy children and they adored their Mommy, as she did them. She protected and cared for her babies the best way she knew how without asking a mf’er for nothing
