Donald James Joseph Arthur Fields
Donald James Joseph Arthur Fields, 48, of Hamtramck, was arraigned Thursday and remanded to the county jail on allegations of abducting a 16-year-old girl at gunpoint from a bus stop in Hamtramck on Monday and sexually assaulting her.
Fields faces two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping, one count of felonious assault, three counts of felony firearm, and one count of felon in possession of a firearm.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office alleges that at about 7:05 a.m. Monday, a fellow student from Frontier International Academy in Detroit saw the victim standing at a bus stop when Fields allegedly pressed an object against her back and forced her into his van. He then drove off and allegedly sexually assaulted her.
The witness called 911.
Police were dispatched to the area of Edwin and Brombach streets in Hamtramck and also went to the victim’s school, where several students were using their cellphones to track the location of the victim's phone.
Authorities allege Fields then drove the victim to a convenience store at a gas station in the 18000 block of Conant Street in Detroit and accompanied her inside to buy cigarettes.
While inside, the victim signaled to the cashier that she was in danger. The cashier came to her aid, and Fields left the store, authorities said. Hamtramck police, using the phone-tracking information, arrived at the gas station, arrested Fields, confiscated a gun, and impounded his van.
“Our young survivor in this case was simply walking in broad daylight when she was viciously attacked and sexually assaulted," said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy. "Despite what she had just gone through, her quick thinking and mental toughness saved her life. We cannot reverse what happened to her, but we can work hard to bring justice to her.”
Fields was arraigned Thursday in Hamtramck’s 31st District Court. A probable cause conference is set for April 30 at 9 a.m. via Zoom.
